Kalki Koechlin born 10 January 1984 is an Indian actress of French descent. She has predominately worked in Bollywood, and is the recipient of a National Film Award, a Filmfare Award, and a Screen Award. Koechlin is best known for her character roles that defy stereotypical portrayal of women in Indian cinema, and has been credited in the media for expressing her honest opinions in public. Drawn to theater from a young age, Koechlin studied drama and theatre at Goldsmiths, University of London, and simultaneously worked with a local theatre company. After returning to India, she made her screen debut in the black comedy-drama Dev.D in 2009, and her performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She then starred in the comedy-dramas Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), top-grossing Bollywood productions which both earned her nominations at Filmfare. She expanded her career into screenwriting with the crime thriller That Girl in Yellow Boots (2011), in which she also played the lead role.
